SMS on Speko
Send text messages from your Speko phone numbers: prerequisites, carrier registration, timelines, and APIs.
Speko numbers can be registered to send SMS in the US and Canada. Getting a number cleared to text has two halves:
- Carrier registration (10DLC) — a one-time compliance step required by US/Canadian carriers for every business that sends application-driven SMS from a local number. Live today, self-serve from the dashboard or the API.
- Sending messages — Speko's SMS sending APIs are in development. Until they ship, a supported interim pattern delivers transactional texts today through your own SMS provider, triggered by Speko webhooks.
Do registration first — carrier review is the slow part (see timelines below). A registered number can start sending the moment the sending API ships, or immediately via the interim pattern.
Prerequisites
Before you can register:
- SMS enabled for your workspace. SMS Compliance is enabled per workspace by the Speko team. If you don't see SMS Compliance under Settings, ask us — in your shared Slack channel or through your Speko contact — and we'll switch it on.
- A Speko-managed phone number. Buy one under Phone Numbers (requires business verification). Numbers imported over a SIP trunk keep messaging through your own carrier and can't be registered here.
- Your business details. Legal name exactly as registered with the IRS, EIN (US tax ID), business address, website, and an authorized contact. Sole proprietors register without an EIN.
The carriers verify your legal name against the IRS record for your EIN — they must match exactly. A recent rename or a DBA in the legal-name field is the most common reason verification fails.
How long it takes
| Step | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Brand identity verification | Minutes to a few hours |
| Campaign carrier review (TCR) | 1-7 business days |
| Number assignment | Minutes |
| End to end | Plan for about a week |
If a step sits unusually long or gets rejected, contact the Speko team — we work with the carrier's compliance queue directly and can escalate a submitted campaign.
The three registration steps
Registration lives at Settings → SMS Compliance:
| Step | Where | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Brand | Brand tab | Your verified business identity, submitted once |
| 2. Campaign | Campaign tab | What you send and how recipients consent |
| 3. Numbers | Numbers tab | Attach your numbers to the approved campaign |
